A longtime leader in aerospace research and service to the aerospace profession, Mavris will help guide AIAA’s strategic direction and strengthen collaboration as part of his three-year term. 

Distinguished Regent’s Professor Dimitri Mavris has been elected to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ (AIAA) Board of Trustees. This appointment reflects Mavris’ distinguished record of academic leadership, innovative research, and sustained service to the aerospace community. 

As a member-at-large, he will contribute his expertise to support the Board’s governance and oversight functions. He will engage on matters of institutional strategy, investment priorities, and long-term planning to better serve academic, industry, and government stakeholders. Mavris’ term on the Board of Trustees starts in May 2026.

“I am honored to be elected to the AIAA Board of Trustees as an at-large member. I look forward to working with AIAA leaders, members, and staff to continue to grow and evolve the Institute to better serve the aerospace profession,” said Mavris. “As a long-time member who has served on a variety of technical and strategic committees and represented AIAA internationally through participation in the International Council of Aeronautical Sciences, I am excited about the opportunities for collaboration and engagement.”

Mavris has been an AIAA member for more than 40 years and has actively participated in conferences and publications. He has served on numerous committees spanning technical activities, emerging technologies, and international activities. His past service to AIAA includes directing the Aviation Technology Integration and Operations Group (2014-2020) and chairing both the Aircraft Design Technical Committee (2000-2002) and the Energy Optimized Aircraft & Equipment Systems Program Committee (2005-2015). He has more recently served on the steering committee for the Aviation Forum.

He has served on key governance bodies, including the AIAA Board of Directors (2014–2017), the Council of Directors (2017–2020), and the Institute Development Committee (2012-2017). He has also held long‑standing roles as a member of the Honors and Awards Committee and chair of its International Cooperation Award Selection subcommittee.

Professor Mavris has supported student engagement as faculty advisor to Georgia Tech’s AIAA Student Chapter since 2012.
